One of the big side stories of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio are the big red spots on American athletes like 21 time gold medalist Michael Phelps. Traditional cupping is an ancient practice from China and has been used by acupuncturists here in the states for decades. The red spots are a sign of the traditional form of cupping.
Cupping massage takes the tradition and blends it with myofascial release.
Unlike the traditional cupping, in massage cupping the cups aren't left in one place for an extended period. Instead the are moved along the body. This work in more in line with myofascial therapies such as Rolfing. How can this benefit you?
By moving the cups you avoid the red marking that is typical of traditional cupping.
The massage cupping equipment is different too.
While the idea of a small piece of flaming tissue under a cup (and next to your skin!) might be a cause for hesitation, the massage cupping system uses a vacuum machine to create even, controllable suction. The intensity can be increased or decreased as needed for the type of treatment being undertaken as well as to accommodate the comfort level of the client. The various cup sizes allow the treatments to be applied to the many different sizes and curvatures of the body, from broad stokes along the back or thighs, to more detailed work on the wrists, feet or face.
What types of therapies can be done with massage cupping?
With both spa type treatments and therapeutic purposes, there are a number of ways cupping massage can be used. As part of my Rolfing practice, using massage cupping before the manual therapie can make the deep tissue Rolfing techniques more effective as well as less stressful on the body thanks to the release of adhesions in the fascia as well as the increased hydration and blood flow. Along with use as part of a Rolfing session, it's also possible to focus an entire session on the cupping massage for any one of the following benefits:
